Drivers of Anaerobic Methanogenesis in Sub-Tropical Reservoir Sediments

چکیده
Anaerobic methanogenesis is dependent on key macronutrients (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) trace metals (including iron, nickel cobalt) to drive methane production. Reservoir derived emissions have correlated eutrophication status, with elevated associated more eutrophic systems. Additionally, sediment organic matter can enhance emissions, particularly through the ebullition pathway. As such, it critical understand how carbon nutrient inputs into reservoir water columns sediments improve flooded land greenhouse gas emission estimates. In this study we examine potential of in mesotrophic (Little Nerang Dam) (Lake Wivenhoe) sub-tropical reservoirs under different availabilities using biological (BMP) tests. BMP tests were conducted incubated anaerobic conditions replicate controls (reservoir bottom waters) or treatments (excess and/or availability). The results indicated that these systems are limited. addition significantly increases by 20-fold over controls. Analysis samples from showed both replete macronutrient metal content for methanogenesis. Finally, a comprehensive catchment monitoring program Little Dam measuring inflow events, lateral transport forest litter, bulk atmospheric deposition inflows litter strongly linked rainfall accounted than 99% total annual load. This suggests frequency events driver humid, region.

Aquatic macrophytes in the large, sub-tropical Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil.
In the last three decades, rapid assessment surveys have become an important approach for measuring aquatic ecosystem biodiversity. These methods can be used to detect anthropogenic impacts and recognize local or global species extinctions. We present a floristic survey of the aquatic macrophytes along the Brazilian margin of the Itaipu Reservoir conducted in 2008 and compare this with a floris...
متن کاملAnaerobic Sediments
The potential for ferric iron reduction with fermentable substrates, fermentation products, and complex organic matter as electron donors was investigated with sediments from freshwater and brackish water sites in the Potomac River Estuary. In enrichments with glucose and hematite, iron reduction was a minor pathway for electron flow, and fermentation products accumulated. The substitution of a...
متن کاملAssociation of hydrogen metabolism with methanogenesis in Lake Mendota sediments.
Lake Mendota sediments were studied to determine the role of H2 in sediment methanogenesis. H2 was generally not detectable in sediment. The addition of H2 to sediment significantly increased methanogenensis. The amount of methane produced was proportional to the concentration of hydrogen added. H2 addition stimulated the reduction of CO2 to methane, but did not significantly stimulate the conv...
متن کاملHerbicide accumulation and evolution in reservoir sediments.
The aim of the present study was to understand the effect of reservoir configurations on sediment pesticide fate. Two dams were selected on the River Garonne, in southwest France: Carbonne and Golfech, both with reservoirs subject to accumulation of herbicide-contaminated sediment. They are situated upstream and downstream respectively of an agricultural and urban area: the Mid-Garonne. The res...
متن کاملBromeliad Catchments as Habitats for Methanogenesis in Tropical Rainforest Canopies
Tropical epiphytic plants within the family Bromeliaceae are unusual in that they possess foliage capable of retaining water and impounded material. This creates an acidic (pH 3.5-6.5) and anaerobic (<1 ppm O(2)) environment suspended in the canopy. Results from a Costa Rican rainforest show that most bromeliads (n = 75/86) greater than ~20 cm in plant height or ~4-5 cm tank depth, showed prese...
